Credit cards are so convenient that now-a-days most people use it. The
biggest advantage is that they do not need to carry cash. Unfortunately,
the fraud is also increasing. The identity thief has various means of
swindling money. Credit card fraud is one of them. The thief poses as
government servant, company official, member of a charity organization
or somebody like that and persuades you to give your credit card particulars.
If you become a victim, it amounts to lot of waste of time and money.
You also suffer mental torture. If you inform the credit card company
immediately after the theft has taken place, may be you can be saved to
some extend.
‘Skimming’ is one of the means adopted by the thief for the theft. Even
at the time of processing of the credit cards the thief comes in to play
and makes use of a special storage device to steal the number.
Credit card theft can be prevented if you take some little care. Credit
card companies display a photograph of the real cardholder on the card
thus preventing criminals from purchase. Most cards have three dimensional
images, hidden images, secret prints etc. This prevents creation of new
card with a stolen card number.
In spite of all these security measures by the company, you can still
be put to task. So always protect your credit card, credit card number,
credit card sales slip etc.
Never hand over your card to anyone. If your close relative or friend
needs the card for some purchase, tell that you will make purchase yourself.
Do not have many cards. One or maximum two will do. The credit card should
not include your personal identification number. So the thief will have
no chance for foul play.
Keep Photostat copies of the card. Note down the phone numbers of the
company and keep it safe.
If at all the theft took place inform the company immediately. This will
enable the company to prevent the thief from playing the trick.
Never let out Your Credit Card Number: Thieves only need your card number,
not the card for his operation, that is, to make purchases through phone
or email. The can create fresh credit card incorporating your name and
number. Do not tell out the number loudly in the presence pf others.
Whenever you are allured to apply for a new card, simply tear off the
application form, which comes through mail. Do not allow the thief to
get something even from the trash.
Even when it necessitates your handing over of the credit card to a genuine
person, take care that a third person is not around. Someone might be
interested to copy your number.
Be careful with the telemarketers. Do not give your number unless you
are sure about the legitimacy of the company.
Never invite problems by telling the number to any outsider who speaks
to you as if representing a bank or company. If necessary, you talk to
the company directly. Make sure your transactions are accurate. Be on
guard for dishonest merchants who might change your credit card slip after
you sign it.
Avoid signing any blank charge slip. Before signing take care not to leave
blank spaces, which would be filled up without your knowledge. Check whether
the total figure tallies with the actual sum.
Ensure that the credit card receipts strictly match the actual purchase
you made.
Check whether there is any bogus entry in the monthly billing statement.
If you find something fishy inform the credit card company without any
delay.
There are government agencies intended to educate customers from being
cheated. Take their guidance.
