Credit cards are extremely helpful and safe especially when you travel
abroad. You do not have to carry hot cash in hand. Further, nowadays Hoteliers
insist on credit card if you ask for accommodation. Travel agents ask
for credit cards not only when you want to purchase plane tickets, but
also for local tours in cars, buses etc. Credit card has become a way
of life.
However, Credit cards are open to frauds and scams, and you must be cautious
while handling credit cards. Credit card theft is very common. Do not
allow yourself to be the victim of the theft.
A credit card fraud is a counterfeit transaction made
by a crook with somebody’s credit card, immediately after it is stolen
this would happen even before the victim learns that the card is missing.
By the time he reports the matter to the bank concerned, the thief would
have achieved his need.
The following tips will help in fraud prevention:
o Put your signature at the back of the card. Keep a Photostat copy of
the card and keep in a safe place.
o Keep receipts of your credit card purchases. Check your statements regularly
and inform the credit card company if you find any discrepancy.
o Never let out your credit card information over the phone unless you’re
dealing with a genuine party.
o Ensure that you’re on a secure website before dealing in online transaction
o Never respond to emails that ask you to furnish your credit card number
o Do not disclose the Pin number of the card to anyone. If you want to
write the number somewhere use codes so that you alone can make out the
number. Avoid noticeable Pins such as your date of birth.
o Have the card provider’s contact details always with you. In case of
necessity, report to them so that the card can be cancelled before any
mishap is carried out.
o Avoid credit card being taken away for swiping in shops, restaurants,
petrol filling stations etc.
o Stand close to the cash machine to prevent others from watching you
enter your Pin number. Shield the keypad with your spare hand and your
body.
When you travel abroad, you have to take extra precautions as follows
apart from what is given above to prevent credit card fraud:
1. Inform the company about your travel plans, including dates and places
of visits and the period of stay abroad.
2. Keep your credit cards securely in the hand baggage, which should be
always with you and not along with the main luggage in the plane, where
you have no access.
3. Never leave it in the hotel room at the mercy of the room boys.
